MOUNT PISGAH BAPTIST CHURCH

Mt. Pisgah was founded in 1905 by the following persons and their families: Mrs. Hattie Washington, Mrs. Martha Gilchrist, Mrs. Lela T. Bell, Mrs. Florence Gregg, Mrs. Anna Harrison, Mr. Waiters Harrison, and Mr. Leroy Grainger. Worship services were held under a tree on Georgetown Street. Later, the small congregation moved to a house. It was during a prayer service that the hymn “Sweet Hour of Prayer” was being led by Mrs. Washington. Upon singing the third verse: (Sweet hour of prayer, sweet hour of prayer, May I thy consolation share, Till from Mount Pisgah’s lofty height, I view my home and take my flight.), Mrs. Washington was inspired to name our church, Mt. Pisgah.
