Derby Day 2005…
This was the day that John suffered an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI).
He was flown by helicopter from the scene of the accident to the hospital. The next three months of acute care were challenging. And, the subsequent road toward recovery was long and fraught with difficulty.
Kentucky’s ABI Waiver program was designed to help brain injured patients rehabilitate in a community setting rather than in an institution.
Care for patients with brain injuries in Kentucky is organized into three main categories:
Acute hospitalization and acute inpatient rehab
Residential Setting: Medicaid ABI Waiver Program, acute and long term
Institutional long term care, ex. nursing homes
Clients in residential programs often go to and from the hospital without much integration or continuity of care, which can result in poor outcomes.
John’s road to recovery was long, perilous and incomplete. He required a great deal of care due to his complex medical conditions. Because of these experiences we started Modern Care and John was our first client.
Many families are unable to withstand the enormous effort required to access proper care for their loved one. Our agency is especially geared to treat the individual as a whole. We know by direct experience what you are going through. We have also seen that many TBI patients have become separated from their families because of their behavioral difficulties and their complex medical needs.
We integrate our care closely with the local medical community to keep our clients well and medically stable. We provide a caring atmosphere where the clients can feel secure, allowing for an optimal response to therapy. We are especially careful to treat your loved one with dignity and respect.
