UPMC ST. MARGARET FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY

Situated on the northern bank of the Allegheny River, UPMC St. Margaret is 250-bed acute care, community, and teaching hospital serving residents of Pittsburgh’s inner city and adjacent suburbs.
Steeped in history, St Margaret Hospital was established in 1898 in Lawrenceville on the land of the estate of a wealthy iron manufacturer and philanthropist John H. Shoenberger. He bequeathed both the land and the money to establish a hospital in the “loving memory” of his wife Margaret, who was known for her generosity and her many acts of kindness. The hospital was therefore named “Saint Margaret” to honor Mr. Shoenberger’s wife, and not for a particular religious affiliation. In 1980, St Margaret Hospital moved to its current location to be closer to all the communities it served.
