SOUTH JERSEY MECHANICAL CONTRACTORS ASSOCIATION

The official history of the South Jersey Mechanical Contractors Association (SJMCA) dates back to 1971, but its origins extend further into the past. Before the 20th century, Camden and Atlantic City were pivotal hubs in South Jersey, with Atlantic City emerging as a bustling vacation destination, prompting the construction of hotels and restaurants in need of trained workforce and contractors. Meanwhile, Camden thrived with industrial and manufacturing activities, also necessitating skilled craftsmen. Local 121 was established in Atlantic City and chartered in 1905, while Local 322 took shape in Camden and received its charter in 1915.
For over 70 years, these two unions negotiated with local contractors. However, the late 1960’s brought economic shifts, prompting the creation of a new identity — merging the two locals and the unification of separate contractor groups to give rise to the present-day SJMCA.
Today, SJMCA is a comprehensive service provider for contractors in the pipe trades industry. The Association has actively advocated for the benefits of union construction in South Jersey, representing its contractors in both Washington and Trenton. SJMCA has played a key role in resolving jurisdictional disputes and facilitating labor contract agreements.
Beyond advocacy, SJMCA assumes the role of educator, industry spokesperson, safety advisor, collaborative partner with other construction trades, information hub, and enthusiastic promoter of business and industrial growth in the counties of South Jersey.
In 1997, SJMCA and UA Local 322 established “The Alliance” to champion and market union construction in the region. Collectively, they support construction-related education at local Universities, offering scholarships to exceptional Mechanical Engineering Students. SJMCA also provides grants to outstanding graduates from local high schools emphasizing the advantages of a highly trained workforce utilized by SJMCA contractors.
Further demonstrating its commitment, SJMCA has entered into an Alliance Agreement with UA LU 322, OSHA and the NJ Department of Labor.
The SJMCA’s membership includes a diverse range of both large and small mechanical and plumbing contractors, each holding an equal voice in the affairs and activities of the Association.
