Our Therapeutic Alliance Begins With Trust
Life can sometimes seem a painful and distressing journey. We may struggle with feelings and thoughts and may come to believe people around us do not understand us or appreciate the situation in which we find ourselves. When this happens, it can feel like our goals and dreams are quickly receding out of reach. We search not only for the reasons for our distress but, more importantly, for relief and resolution to bring us back to the calm and safe harbor of our previous state of mind and daily routines. You have tried several approaches and strategies and yet here you are. Nevertheless, each step brings hope and resolution.
To the individual struggling with doubt, ambivalence, or interpersonal crisis, I can offer unwearied attention, empathy, and support. To couples in turmoil, I can assist in counseling. To the adult children and spouses of patients with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, or mild cognitive decline I can offer treatment focused on quality of life and caregiving. To the person in the process of transgender transition, I can offer counseling, education, and empathic acceptance. For healing, resolution, or impetus forward to occur, a therapeutic alliance needs to be negotiated and formed. Mutual trust and transparency supported by a reasonable and effective course of treatment, and an acknowledgment of our limitations are key factors in forming this therapeutic alliance.
