The mission of the Cashiers Glenville Volunteer Fire Department is to protect the lives and property of the people of Southern Jackson County. The department was founded in 1967. The department’s district is located in southern Jackson County North Carolina, it is classified as a rural district and covers approximately 130 square mile. Located within the district boundaries are the communities of Cashiers, Sapphire Valley, Glenville, Big Ridge, Yellow Mountain, Pine Creek, Norton, Breedlove and Heady Mountain. The district has a full time population of four to five thousand people. During the summer the population, increases to over twenty thousand. The department has earned an ISO class 6/9e public protection classification
The department membership is a combination of career/paid firefighters and volunteers. There are 8 paid firefighters, the rest of the membership is volunteers. The members spend considerable time each year responding to calls, training, attending meetings and participating in drills.
The majority of the department’s operating budget is derived from a district fire tax.
This area has historically been a summer resort and second home area, but that is changing. An increasing number of households are moving to the area or making the area their primary residence. Fire protection and medical services are provided by separate organizations. The Cashiers Glenville Volunteer Fire Department provides fire protection and the Glenville Cashiers Rescue Squad provides medical and rescue services. As the area grows so do the calls for assistance. The two departments have experienced an increased volume of calls and expects that the volume will continue to rise. Police protection is provided by the Jackson County Sheriffs Office.
