At the beginning of 1954, under the initiative of Lope Flores, the idea of organizing a cooperative arose. Motivated by the difficult economic and social conditions of the parishioners, the members of the Society of the Holy Name in the Dulce Nombre de Jesús Cathedral in Caguas, begin the process of orientation and organization of a cooperative.
Finally, on April 25, 1958, the Puerto Rico Department of State issues the Certificate of Incorporation that certifies the Cooperativa de Ahorro San Alfonso. Its initial operation was offered to associates after Sunday Masses from an office located in the parish house in the Dulce Nombre de Jesús Cathedral in this city.
In the sixties, it was relocated to different rented premises on Acosta, Betances, and Jiménez Sicardó streets. At the beginning of the seventies, motivated by the advice of Monsignor Antulio Parrilla Bonilla, the Cooperative was opened to the entire community to serve other sectors. As a result of the approval of a new law for savings and credit cooperatives in Puerto Rico, savings services are extended to those people who are not members.
In 1974 a new store was opened in Urb. Paradis on the corner of Calle Muñoz Rivera. In 1977 it changed its name to the current Cooperativa de Ahorro y Crédito Caguas. Due to the continuous growth, at the end of 1979 the construction of a building began to be planned where better services could be offered to its members. While the new building is being built, the facilities are transferred to a branch that opened in 1981 in a small Shopping Center in Villa Victoria. On January 31, 1984, the new facilities where the Cooperative is currently located are inaugurated.
Faced with the demand to expand services, we joined the ATH network and the first ATM was installed in the Cooperativa del Turabo in 1993. In response to the demand to expand to other areas of the city, on June 14, 1996 the first branch in the Plaza del Carmen Shopping Center. But since 1993, it had been planned to open a branch to the east, which was inaugurated on March 31, 1998.
In July 2007, the operation of the Plaza Turabo and Plaza del Carmen branches were consolidated into a modern Caguas Coop branch. Central. In these facilities, centralized services are provided combining advances in technology such as efficiency and agility of human resources.
Throughout these years, we have celebrated our achievements by transforming a Cooperative with limited resources into one of the first thirty cooperatives in Puerto Rico. Today it fills us with satisfaction to know that the idea of that small group of people has become a solid, avant-garde financial institution and one of the most important pillars of the city of Caguas.
