But for those of us who have, the moment comes with a rude awakening to just how emotionally unprepared we are to respond, how quickly that moment can get too big for us, and how long that moment will impact us. The games athletes play provide immeasurable lifelong benefits, but for some, one brief moment leads to devastating life-long consequences. It is at this moment that we come to know just how vital our experiences are to the outcome for someone’s son, daughter, friend, teammate, mother, or father.
