The Michigan Indian Education Council (MIEC) formed in 1977 and subsequently incorporated as a voluntary not-for-profit 501c3 organization in 1994. We are an advocacy organization concerned with Native American education throughout the State of Michigan. We host an annual Native American Critical Issues Conference. The location of the Conference varies as do the sponsors. The conference attracts a broad range of people interested in Indian education issues including teachers, policy makers, Title VI Indian Education Act programs, tribal schools, tribal colleges, tribal education departments, and Native American studies programs. It also includes a professional and youth track.
