Providence Baptist Church
Upon This Rock, I Will Build My Church: and The Gates of Hell Shall Not Prevail Against It. Matthew 16:18
With This proclamation as our foundation, this church has stood as a spiritual fort in time of storm and a harbor of safety for over 150 years.
In the year 1854 some of the older members coming from Gilfield Baptist Church and First Baptist Church, Harrison Street, Petersburg, Virginia worshipped together in a Bush Harbor (Brush Arbor) on the Jessie Bonner’s (a white man) Estate near Reams, Virginia. The late Rev. Russell Smith, a white man, was the first Pastor. The Church was organized in 1856; it was named Providence Baptist Church.
After starting in a Bush Harbor a church was built also on the Bonner estate near the Prince George County and Dinwiddie County line which was on heir-property. In 1900 the members purchased land from Judge Reed in Prince George County, Virginia to build another church. The location of this land was in the Templeton District. The Church was constructed under the leadership of the late Rev. John Jones; he served as Pastor for twenty-five years.
Providence Baptist Church helped establish other churches; (Rising) Mount Zion, Carson, VA was started in 1871 and organized in 1880; Little Mount Baptist Church, Disputanta, VA was organized in 1873 and the first church was built in 1905. In 1880 some members came to Providence to request permission to start a church which became Loving Union Baptist Church, Disputanta, VA.
Providence Baptist Church has had the pleasure of being served with 12 pastors. We have also been blessed with the diligent service of 14 License and/or ordained Assistant Ministers, 25 Trustees, 47 Deacons, and 55 Deaconess throughout the years.
Providence Baptist Church has grown through the years and has established 19 ministries. Those ministries are Administration, Finance, Diaconate (which includes Deacons and Deaconess), Ushers, Trustee, Music, Youth, Senior’s, Missionary, Transportation, Audio/Visual, Nurse/Healthcare, Women’s, Men’s, Hospitality, New Member’s Orientation, Christian Education, Pastor Aide, and Culinary Arts.
With our Pastor and members of this great church, we are still looking to God to help us towards the vision of continually moving forward doing the work and will of God, and always remembering our church motto where we are:
